Loot games are often good, but we have seen in the past how they can get boring. (Don't give me too much flak for this but it's extremely true.) My example of a boring shoot and loot game is Borderlands 2. I'm not sure how many of you felt this way, but after a while I felt like I was forced to play the game due to the sheer fact that I didn't have the best guns yet, and had no real incentive of fun to play it. This was due to the fact that nothing else in the game was rewarding. I got the occasional excitement when I opened up a chest at the end of the boss fight, but it would quickly go away. There has to be many incentives to play a game, not just one. It has to be through pure joy of gameplay, new content to explore, rewards for play time, rewards for skill, and a player base that is not lacking. There are other things I'm sure, but by the end of Borderlands 2, all I felt I was getting was reward for play time, and small ones at that. The reason why MMO's are so successful is because they have all that, at a high quality, and have the subscription model to easily back up the new content area. I hope Destiny can deliver, but it's hard to create that experience completely.

The "loot grind" you talk about, is actually a defining feature in many arpg's. It's an integral, expected, and even anticipated mechanic. Take Diablo 3 for instance. Once you finish the game and hit max lvl, the endgame is all about loot. There are no raids or super hard bosses to tackle - you just gain paragon lvl's and farm/grind for loot, whether it be legendaries, gems, or mat's, plans, etc. - it is intentional, and for many, satisfying.

  • In the games I've played, there has been other things to keep me doing the end game bosses, besides loot. A lot of times I know I could be getting better loot somewhere else, but I end up doing the slower way because it's more fun and I do it with my friends in a populated world. I'm sure the levels in Diablo 3 are fun and interesting, but my experience of the end of Borderlands 2 was lame and I didn't feel excited to keep playing.

  • I agree with you on Borderlands, so does Bungie. That link I included about the RPG elements gets into that discussion.

  • Nice video, it's good that Bungie understands the concept in depth. I assumed as much already, but I wanted to give my own opinion that you never hear explicitly in a video.
