I just 100% the game a couple days ago. Very proud.
I did it with a magic build. Got to Drangelic with level around 220 in NG++. Using a magic build is not a terrible thing- it even makes a lot of the game easier. It's underpowered for the first 100 levels, but by the time you're level 100 you're an unstoppable nuke. Hell, I only ever even use the same two spells- the most basic 'Dark Orb' hex with 96 casts and 'Great Lightning Spear' with 30 casts. I never run out of casts before a bonfire. So if you like ranged battle, I recommend it.
If you're just going melee like most people though, there are still tons of options! You'll probably want standard weapon and shield if you're a beginner. For shields, honestly the only number you need to concern yourself with is its damage reduction. Get a shield that has 100 damage reduction ASAP. The first 100 shield I got carried me the rest of the game, even without any upgrades. As for weapons... it depends on your preference. The Fire Longsword is probably the best early game weapon, which you find exploring the Forest of Fallen Giants (essentially the first area). I used it almost the whole game. But weapon just depends on what moveset you like, and if you're favoring strength or dexterity.
Dexterity weapons have a lot more variety- halberds and swords and all kinds of things. Strength weapons go for heavy swords or blunt attacks. Personally I favor dexterity because the movesets are generally much cooler, but it's just a matter of preference.
How do you get so many casts? I've never understood how todo that.
You just put the same spell in multiple attunement slots. I have 7 slots, so I go with 4 Dark Orbs and 3 Great Lightning Spears. The higher your attunement the more casts you get, and my Hexer's Hood increases it even further.
-
I went into my attunement slots and I wasn't able to choose one spell multiple times, do I need to get multiple copies or does that not work for all spells?
-
You need multiple copies of the spell, yes.

don't dark orbs require souls to cast too though?
don't dark orbs require souls to cast too though?
No. the only hexesthat require souls to cast ar e the ones that specifically say so. Pardon the types.

Well then, maybe a faith build is in my future then. I've been thinking of respeccing my tank to a caster for a while now.
-
Hexes go off Intelligence and Faith combined. I go off the Sorcerer's Staff because it can cast both sorceries and hexes and scales S with Intelligence. But come to think of it, since I only ever use Hexes and Miracles now, I should probably switch to another Chime for Hexes that scales up Dark better...

I've finished the end game now. Only thing left is to kill Vendrick (I think). I can go NG+ anytime now, and I don't think I would want to play the same class twice in a row.

Ok, thanks for the help.
