  • Banning a subnet to get rid of one person is like bombing an entire city to kill a single target. Plus, you can get around it by using a VPN.

  • Can you please explain what you mean by subnet? I just started looking at all things related to networking. From what I've seen, a subnet is a sub-group of a network. Say there are three networks that make up one network. Those three networks are subnetworks of the complete network. I've been googling this. Would banning a subnet just make it so that restarting your modem wouldn't work? What would stop someone from using a VPN? I'm a noob and I'm probably getting a lot of things wrong. Sorry.

  • I'm not sure myself really, It's just a while ago this one game server I used to go to play on. One day this guy wouldn't stop trolling no matter how many times the mods IP banned him he would keep coming back. Then the administrator came and said she'll subnet ban him, which she did as the trolling stopped.

If you ban a subnet, you're banning more than one IP. Basically, I imagine an ISP has it's neighborhoods/areas associated with specific subnets. If you ban a subnet, you ban an entire range of IP addresses. When you're preventing a subnet of gaining access, you're using a subnet mask other than 255.255.255.255. All those 255's equal to all 1's in binary, meaning it's matching every single bit with the IP. If you use a subnet mask such as 255.255.255.0 for example, the last byte (or 8 bits) aren't used to find a route. Which means any IP which matches the first 3 octets (byte, or 8 bits) can't gain access. 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 means it looks at everything in that address. 192.168.1.X with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 means anybody with an IP that falls within replacing the X with anything between 1 and 255 gets banned.

  • Subnet ban should make it harder for him, IPs can be easily changed.

  • I hope Bungie's taking notes. There are definitely certain individuals who need to be dealt with.

If you think of an IP address as a telephone number, and IP ban is like call-blocking a specific number. Subnet banning is like blocking an area code. It would mean that one jerk could make Bungie.Net inaccessible to everyone in his neighborhood (or even that town/region) who uses the same ISP (depending on how the ISP manages its subnets). We used to have cookie-based bans that worked on those who weren't aware of the trick or were too lazy to be bothered. The Web Team is aware of the issue, the pain, and the challenges in allowing access to anyone who has a sincere desire to be a part of this community, yet blocking people who are intent on pissing on other people's cornflakes. Stay tuned.
