Pot for PTSD

The recent Army Times has an article on this.
Physicians in states where medical marijuana is available often prescribe the drug for treating post-traumatic stress disorder. But their assumption - that cannabis can help ease the symptoms of PTSD - is based largely on anecdotes and animal research. On march 12, a proposed formal study of how effective the plant might be for treating PTSD in veterans took a giant leap forward when it received approval from the Health and Human Services Department. In a letter to study sponsor Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, an HHS official said researchers have been cleared to buy high-grade marijuana from the National Institute on Drug Abuse - effectively a rubber stamp of the study protocol developed by Dr. Sue Sisley of the University of Arizona College of Medicine. A spokesman for MAPS said marijuana research has been on hold for 22 years, and this proposed study will further the understanding of cannabis' effects on symptoms such as anxiety, angry outbursts and sleep disorders that are prevalent in those with PTSD. During the three-month study, 50 veterans with combat-related PTSD would be divided into groups and receive the equivalent of two joints a day - 0.9 grams - to smoke or inhale by vaporization. Each participant then would submit weekly observations and confirm that he or she followed protocols.
Whatchya think about this?

  • As a guy who has 10 years experience in the military and has a LOT of contact with people/friends with PTSD substance use does not help. Too many of my mates have taken to the booze and even pot to try and help, however none of this reduces the frequency or duration of their episodes. Ever seen someone trip out when high? No imagine that times 1000 when combined with an episode. If you have a psychological disorder pot has also been know to being it to the forefront and amplify the issue too.

    • Hmm, get high and have less stress. Seems like a no-brainer. Problem is you can't go around high all the time and be a functioning member of society. - Der

          • Never smoked pot, so I'm not talking from experience when I say this but doesn't pot make you paranoid? I just don't think that's a good idea to combo that with PTSD. But if it works for them, then by all means. Blaze up.

              • I see it more as a short-term treatment option. Yeah, you may feel great while the high is in effect but what happens when it wears off? Are we going to subject these people to be high all the time? A smart and long-term solution would be something like counseling where somebody could develop skills in order to deal with their condition and live a life not bound to be in a different state of mind

                  • Good news indeed. Not that it's news that cannabis helps people suffering from PTSD, but the fact that they're using it and realizing it does.

                  • Sounds interesting. The issue is that PTSD isn't just stress, it's a clinical disorder like depression; if it can effectively cure PTSD, it would probably work similarly on other disorders, so let's hope it's successful. The next step is full legalization of pot and ending the ridiculous marijuana side of the war on drugs.

                        • Regardless of medical effects, pot should be legal anyway.

                          • Of course it's far superior than getting them addicted to pills or having them kill themselves drinking or just commit suicide. I've seen cannabis help many people with anxiety, depression, PTSD and many other disorders.

                          • Hm. PTSD is a mental disorder, it's not like a disease with a cure. As treatment, a drug like pot is not surprising at all.

Research is good, There isn't a lot of point in making an opinion over it until the results come out. If it helps them, great! If it doesn't make a difference they could try something else, if it makes it worse... that would be cause for concern.
