Interested to see the level of customization we will get in the final product. Also, if their are stats tied to them to augment your character.

In a word, yes.

I just don't want the stats a piece will grant you to be the main factor in choosing a piece of gear. I want to be able to wear what looks cool to me, and not be handicapped for that choice.

The way I think it will be is that the base piece of the armor is what has the stats linked to it, not the little pieces that you take off. I believe this because bungie has been wanting us to do something because we like the looks of it, not because it's a better choice, since the very beginning. For example, races. But that's just what I believe.
