I think that a lot of really good stories won't be converted into films.
The Admiral Thrawn stories definitely come to mind, those would make fantastic films.

And Republic Commando, before the whole business with leaving Star Wars...

It would be a nice way to introduce the mainstream audience to the Expanded Universe by incorporating Thrawn or some other previously established events or characters. But at least at a glance is looks like they've picked a good lore-hiatus point for original story ideas.
