• Iraq closes Abu Ghraib prison amid security fears
Baghdad, Asharq Al-Awsat—Iraq announced on Tuesday that it has closed the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, amid security concerns following the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) gained control of a strategically important dam on the Euphrates River south of Fallujah earlier this month. SIS, which remains in control of large areas of Iraq’s western Anbar province, blocked off the flow of water through the dam earlier this week, strategically flooding areas between Fallujah and Baghdad, including Abu Ghraib, in order to stall the advance of government troops.
Smart move. ISIS was likely to attack the prison eventually, which would have created an even more perilous security situation if these prisoners were broken free. Hopefully, the prison systems in Iraq can be protected against any potential jailbreak attempt by ISIS.

  • Militants close dam as Iraq violence kills 15
BAGHDAD: Militants have closed all gates of a Euphrates River dam they control in Iraq, blocking a major water source, a minister said on Monday, while violence killed 15 people. The latest unrest comes amid a protracted surge in nationwide bloodshed that has claimed more than 2,550 lives so far this year and sparked fears of Iraq slipping back into the all-out sectarian killings of 2006 and 2007
• Bombings Kill at Least 16 People in Northern Iraq
Bombings targeting security forces in northern Iraq killed at least 16 people Sunday, authorities said, as the country prepares for a crucial election later this month. In the deadliest attack, an explosives-laden parked car exploded as a joint Iraqi army and police patrol passed through a busy commercial area in Mosul, killing five civilians and five security personnel, a police officer said. He said the blast wounded 12. A medical official confirmed the figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.
• ISIS's push into Baghdad. This is very troubling for the security, and even future of Iraq. I recommend giving this a read.
The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has expanded its activity in the areas surrounding Baghdad, making public appearances in the region of Buhriz in the Diyala province (east of Baghdad) and in Nibai (north of Baghdad) in an effort to clamp down on the capital and to transfer the battle from Fallujah to new regions. Security sources told Al-Monitor that Qara Tapa in Baqouba has recently been added to the list of areas chosen by ISIS to organize a media appearance. Towns like Sulaiman Bek, al-Azim and Muqdadiyah in the east and north of the Babil province have witnessed similar appearances. This raises questions about the goals of ISIS and the responses of the Iraqi security forces, specifically in relation to the way ISIS emerged in these towns and then withdrew.
Very good report on new ISIS activities in Iraq.

  •
BAGHDAD: Attacks in Baghdad and predominantly Sunni Arab areas of northern and western Iraq killed nine people on Friday, the latest in a surge of bloodshed ahead of a general election. The shootings and bombings, which also wounded dozens more, came with campaigning in full swing for the April 30 election and with violence at its highest level since 2008. The unrest has been principally driven by anger in the Sunni Arab community over alleged mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government and security forces, as well as a spillover from the civil war in neighboring Syria.
One of the more rare and interesting attacks on Sunnis in Iraq.

    http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2014/04/isis_parades_on_outs.php
Less than two weeks ago, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham, or ISIS, held a military parade in Fallujah and another parade in Abu Ghraib, a city in Anbar province that is just two miles from the capital of Baghdad. Video of the two ISIS parades, which are thought to have taken place on March 20, was published on YouTube today. In the video of the Abu Ghraib parade [above], scores of assorted vehicles filled with ISIS fighters, waving al Qaeda's black banner and brandishing assault rifles, pass by a man as he records the event. No Iraqi Army or police presence is seen during the eight-minute video.
The video above is the parade in Abu Gharib. Notice all the stolen vehicles from the Iraqi military, which includes several HMMWV's. Sadly, the Iraqi military and their Sunni Awakening allies have yet to significantly oust ISIS from several parts of Anbar province and Iraq in general. It would be wise for the US to encourage a new offensive, better coordination between the government and the Sunni Awakening (includes more rights for Sunni's), and hastening our training program for Iraqi commandos in Jordan, as well as speeding up sales of needed equipment to Iraq. The video from Fallujah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VjSSj3_AIs Both videos are safe for work. Although, I'd definitely turn down your volume for the first one. The guy holding the camera likes to yell.

  • U.N. warns of increasing militant links between Iraq, Syria
(Reuters) - The United Nations on Thursday warned about Islamist militant networks increasingly forging links across the border of Syria and Iraq, which is fueling sectarian tensions in a region that has suffered from years of bloodshed. Violence in Iraq reached new highs in 2013, when nearly 8,000 civilians were killed. Its political elite remains deeply divided along sectarian lines, as it has been since after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq 11 years ago this month.
Again I say that we really ought to expedite our arms sales to Iraq and hasten our training program in Jordan.

  •
Thirty-seven people were killed on Friday in a wave of bombings and attacks across Iraq, and eight soldiers were kidnapped, security officials said. At dawn, a suicide bomber drove a truck filled with explosives into a police station in northeastern Diyala Province, followed by gunmen who sprayed bullets from speeding S.U.V.s. • Iraq a bloody lesson for Zero Option in Afghanistan
It has been more than a week that the Iraqi army is shelling the Anbar city of Falluja in an effort to clear out Al-Qaeda linked fighters. The strife has been spinning from city to city and violence has flared up in recent days because of ethnic and government differences between the Shiite-led government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Sunni groups. The Militants according to reports have seized Fallujah, one of the key cities in western Iraq, depicting a brazen challenge to Iraq’s government. Since the US troops have left the country, sectarian violence has replaced it, where thousands have been killed so far, this violence has nearly tore the country apart. Violence in Iraq last year (2013) was the worst ever since last five years, while these days it has reached to its peak.
What do you guys think? Do you think this article holds some truth or do you think it's BS?
