Would there be any reason that it would be against any significant western interests for Putin to instigate a de facto annexation of Crimea or other sections of Eastern Ukraine, if that is indeed what he's doing?

There is an agreement by Russia, the US, the UK and someone else to not interfere with the Ukraine's sovereignty, so they've already broken that

Tom might know more, but besides for geopolitical reasons I can't think of any. Curbing the spread of Russian influence is a big enough reason.
