What is a "non-human body?" If I cut off my arm, my body no longer matches with the normal human body? Would that be a non-human body?

  • I don't understand your logic in this post. I have a teacher without an arm, still a human. Just because someone is missing an arm or leg doesn't make them any less human than someone who isn't. The first non-human being that comes to mind is a dog. I just don't understand how you came up with such an outrageous question.

Does he wear a prosthetic? If so, his body (if we are to consider the prosthetic as part of the body) is not entirely human. But is he still human? Certainly. From this example, we can determine that the definition of "human" does not lie entirely in form alone. But, would a computer program designed as an exact replica of an individual's mind and given a mechanical body be human? This is (obviously, since this is a debate thread) debatable. From this example, it can be determined that the definition of "human," is possibly tied to the human body to an extent. So where do we draw the line? I don't know. I have only created my example to create boundaries to discuss within.

Would you consider someone who is missing an arm to not be human? I hope not. I am referring to a genetically non-human body, like a machine or another animal. But I'm more interested in the machine case.

  • I wouldn't even consider this a case of Theseus' Ship. The resulting being has no human components and is thus not human.

  • So, you wouldn't consider human consciousness a human component?

  • You can't transplant consciousness like you can an organ. You can only create a copy and implant it into a vessel.

  • Are you saying that it is not a human component if it is not tangible? Thoughts and values are not part of humans? I guess it is plausible to view things like ideas and consciousness as byproducts of more tangible things.

  • I do not consider consciousness a human component unless it originates directly from a human brain.
