Best Halo comic series (not that it had a great deal of competition, considering most of the others were...kind of shit *COUGH* Uprising *COUGH*).
You can tell that it's Schlerf who is writing it throughout because it perfectly encapsulates a good number of those human themes introduced in Halo 4. Scruggs telling Palmer that "I am a Spartan. But what you fight for isn't always the same as who you fight for", echoes just about everything said in A Hero Awakens where Kiki/Chris/Josh all make their agenda regarding the development of Halo's story clear - making us question what it means to be a hero and whether the sacrifice is worth it. It's no wonder that we see that parallel imagery of Palmer standing where John stood on the observation deck following the death of somebody close, and I am genuinely engaging with palmer in this series.
"Tom, you're one of my closest friends. But right now, you need to get the hell away from me..."
This is what I want to see! Not the cookie-cutter commander replacement for Johnson, but this strong and independent woman who is a capable leader who has to make sacrifices which leave a lasting impression on her. She's starting to see that it's not simply a case of "orders are orders", that this is actually a very real conflict where nobody is safe - I was genuinely surprised that DeMarco was killed off, it was a ballsy decision by Schlerf but it damn well worked.
And Scruggs states that there are more than just two sides at work (YES!), I am bloody loving this series. I really am, it's the perfect way to keep us tided over month-by-month over the course of a year.

You brought up how john hasn't been seen for over a year?
-
Yeah, Scruggs asks Palmer why there's been no word from the Master Chief - the specific panel shows John looming over a human city holding something in his hand (looks like Cortana's chip).
-
I want to see this panel now...

Here. :)

Hm.. I am holding off on him going rogue just yet because he could be on a mission.
-
Agreed, there's really no information available to speculate about. All we know is that he's not been seen for a while, that's it.

I hope he's okay. :(

I just hope he meets up with Blue Team again, I simply adore their group dynamic. John and Kelly especially should be reunited, I'm not normally the 'shipping' type but their relationship and the subtext wherein is amazing. Take, for instance, the Spartan-II 'smile gesture'- a hand motion that indicates from one armoured Spartan-II to another that they are smiling behind their helmet because they (obviously) can't see each other's faces. We learn about it from Anton and John.
"The two stood there a moment and then Anton moved his hand, making a quick, short gesture with his index and forefinger over the faceplate of his helmet where his mouth would be. That was their signal for a smile—the closest any Spartan got to an emotional outburst."
Soon afterwards...
"Kelly quickly reached out and swiped her two fingers against John’s faceplate."
If a regular 'smile' is the closest any Spartan gets to an emotional outburst, Kelly's special gesture here must be be something equivalent to a great big hug! :P
