I think it would definitely interfere with the plot and they already made it clear the traveler was an ally

it could be controlled by the Darkness once again?! cant it. then the Guardians are going to go & fight it with all the skills everyone has earned to knock down the Traveler

Bungie never said the traveler was controlled by the darkness and if the darkness and the traveler teamed up humanity probably wouldn't stand a chance lol
