Sorry, but no. You raise the minimum wage, and companies lay off workers to compensate for the wage increase. Seriously, why do you think America's manufacturing jobs are all overseas? Because in China, Taiwan, India, whatever, they get paid shit. It's cheap labor. If every state in America set their minimum wage to 7.50, our unemployment rate would dramatically decrease.

  • Manufacturing workers get paid well above minimum wage (The BLS says the average wage is nearly 20 dollars for non-supervisory workers). That's why people get upset when manufacturing jobs are lost - they're not just jobs, they're good jobs. It's mostly the hospitality and service industries that are affected by changes to the minimum wage, I'm pretty sure - it could simply be that those industries are better able to absorb wage increases through consequent increases in the prices of their products without firing their employees. But, either way, this working paper points to an academic consensus of layoffs being outweighed by wage increases for low wage workers, when it comes to reducing poverty.

  • I don't know what it's like in America, I'll admit that. But where I'm from, I get $15 an hour. As an 18 year old, that's the minimum wage. I was pretty much hired on the spot when I applied. Also, not all jobs are manufacturing. There are still lots of jobs that can't be outsourced. Also, the jobs that are outsourced generally have lower qualifications. The truth is that robots are probably more of a threat to manufacturing jobs than foreigners, and that's ok because the more technical jobs are still available.

  • The problem still exists. Even in your country. While it's nice that you got a job, there's still the unknown (since I don't know what country you live in) number of people who are unemployed. They can't be employed because the minimum wage is too high. As for the second part, it's really minimum wage jobs in general that require lower qualifications. That's why they pay minimum wage. Let's face it, unless you're disabled, anyone can work in a factory, or bus tables in a restaurant, or do any other minimum wage job.

Not true. Anyone can get a job in Australia. You might have to move to another town/ city, but there's always work. Worst comes to worst you can always head out west, they're dying for workers out there. Minimum wage is good for the country. Bus tables at a restaurant will always need local workers. Raising the minimum wage won't impact the amount of workers they have there, unless they already hired too many to remain efficient. Also, what about people with multiple jobs? When the minimum wage is increased, some people may quit their other jobs as a singular job is now paying the bills. This in turn, would lead to more jobs. Many people who don't have qualifications have multiple jobs, simply to attain more money (I do it) EDIT: Also, when employees are paid more money, then they will spend that money. This in turn, gives businesses more money which will allow them to maintain their current employee numbers. It's like the trickle down theory, but would actually probably work.
