Canon v. Artistic Freedom

Since we are in the midst of our entertainment industry pushing out countless superhero movies, I have a question. Should directors be more concerned with sticking to what's canon or should they feel like they can take artistic liberties (big or small). Would you prefer one route over the other?

A lot of the characters we're seeing in movies now have be rewritten and reinterpreted so many different times by so many different people that it's impossible to honor all of the source material. A little bit of artistic freedom has been the norm for a long time. I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape about little deviations in movies.

    • If they want artistic freedom, they should create something new and stop messing with already established canon.

    • Important stuff should be left canon, but minor details can be altered to make a better theatrical experience.

sticking to canon = safe bet that will usually satisfy everyone artistic liberties = divisiveness + negativity i find the first one more satisfying, but the second more interesting

      • In the Marvel continuity, the movies are canon...for Earth 199999, which is the universe for the movies.
