It was a good movie, has some dumb things in it though. How did the egg get on the Sulaco?

Aliens ruins the mystery of the xeno by turning them into bugs that are lead by a queen.

They were always meant to be like that, it was in the original script of Alien even. Plus, the Queen was awesome.

I've read the crew of the Nostromo were supposed to find a temple on the planet (similar to the temple that was in AvP 2004) and find a tablet/hieroglyphic thingy that explained the alien life cycle.
