They wanted to make it a spiritual successor to The 4 Heroes of Light that came out on the DS awhile ago, unfortunately, the game was an okay entry, but it needed some polishing and for myself, it had some things that made it look like a little bit of a drag to play. Like with Ni No Kuni which was an excellent entry on the PS3 last year, it's combat system was nigh horrible, and in a game where a little bit of grinding will be needed, you're having to grind your face on sandpaper to proceed, and that can kill the story when you can only advance through combat.
Bravely Default was what the successor to The 4 was eventually called, and it seems a lot of what we didn't like in the previous one was adjusted, and we're getting the even more improved version that Japan eventually got that came out for them in 2012. So it's a spinoff of the main series.
