Let's put the shoe on the other foot: What if psychopaths aren't inherently emotionless people who can then turn it on, but rather extremely emotional people who turn it off as a defense mechanism?

An interesting thought. However, studies into Children with Psychopathy (Or early markers/strong predisposition) have shown that they are lacking in any normal emotional reactions, they do show anger and very frequently hence the problem child coming to the attention of the doctors - diagnosis of Psychopathy. I'd also suggest that Psychopaths aren't inherently emotionless because of the one emotion that seems to shine through regardless of their condition - Hatred/Anger/Fury/Loathing/Disgust that spectrum of emotions. It's Empathy that they lack and it's easy to confuse the two because they come hand in hand for most people but there is a distinction made for Psychopaths.

I wasn't confusing the two, just a bad choice of words. Replace emotion with empathy, and I, at least personally, believe that theory makes more sense than assuming they were born distorted. Instead they're finding their own way to deal with their extreme empathy/emotions by avoiding it all together or flipping it on it's head and turning it into hatred or disgust. I don't think psychopaths are inherently hatred people, but they act that way as a response to the lack of empathy they witness in the world around them. Of course, this is just my amateur speculation.

Have you had a read of the second article linked at the bottom? It has some interesting observations on how a happy childhood/loving family has contributed to one Psychopath not being a full blown Psychopath.
