Balrog apparently. Did some research and found someone on another forum who knows what they're talking about.
There were three battles occuring with Balrogs:
- Glorfindel vs. a Balrog: both perished
- Echtelion vs. Gothmog: both perished
- Gandalf vs. a Balrog: both perished
There were four battles with Dragons:
- Turin vs. Glaurung: Turin killed the dragon without dying himself
- Eärendil vs. Ancalagon: Eärendil killed the dragon
- Fram vs. Scatha: Fram killed the dragon
- Bard vs. Smaug: Bard killed the dragon
Can any conclusion be made from this? The Balrogs fought with two Eldar and a Maia, and all of them perished in the fight. The Dragons fought with three men and a half-elf and none of the latter died in combat. Do I really have to say it out loud? The Balrogs would win over dragons any day!
Not really good evidence for this situation. Bard only shot a single arrow. A well-placed arrow, yes, but he wasn't incredibly powerful, even though Smaug was. Scatha wasn't even one of the Great Dragons. With Ancalagon, it was essentially war against just him by entire armies (also Eärendil is a beast). Glaurung was only beaten because of his size. Gandalf was by himself (he wasn't even that powerful at the time), Ecthelion won because of water, and Glorfindel was also a beast. Each battle has its own conditions. They can't be compared and contrasted, so no conclusion can be made from it. If Smaug were to fight Durin's Bane, Smaug would most likely win. It wouldn't be easy, though.

Edited by GKR: 1/14/2014 9:51:30 PMI doubt Gothmog was slain solely due to the Fountain of the King. Early versions of the Fall of Gondolin say he drowned, but I don't know if this detail would have been included in a hypothetical rewrite. Durin's Bane was also cast into water when he and Gandalf fell into the subterranean lake at the bottom of the Chasm of Khazad-dum, and this only turned him temporarily into "a thing of slime". Perhaps Ecthelion was just beastly as well. He did impale Gothmog with his helmet after all.

Perhaps. I wish it were more clear.

Edited by SonOfTheShire: 1/14/2014 9:35:38 PMI can't speak for most of those battles, but Gandalf versus a Balrog and Bard versus Smaug isn't really a fair comparison. Gandalf took the Balrog on in a straight-up fight, whereas Bard shot Smaug's weak spot from afar (and he only knew about said weak spot thanks to Bilbo), while Smaug was otherwise occupied. Had it just been Bard against Smaug, the dragon would've definitely won.

Wish I hadn't said Smaug
