Here's a really nice site someone showed me a while back with a lot of good character design tips/tricks, process etc. Also, here's a little something of mine done for school a few years ago, where I had to sketch a random movie star.

 • Those tips are awesome! I'm saving those to look at later Your anatomy, proportions, and observation are really great and show well in that drawing! The only thing I can suggest would be to add more dark contrast to make it pop. Great job dude

 • Thanks, you're definitely right about the contrast. It's so light because I sketched it with a 3H pencil. Not really the best tool for portraits.

 • Have you ever tried your hand with charcoal?

 • No. I love what people have done with it but a lot of my work is really small and detailed in places so I prefer to use very fine tools. I may try it for some quick rough sketches but I'll probably stick to my H pencils and fine liners.

 • That's cool :D Some people are really excellent with rough concepts, but I too enjoy fine details and the small lines. I'm rather cheap myself though and use generic pencils/mechanical.

 • I use mechanical pencils as well. You don't have to have use anything fancy. In fact, I usually tell people to stay away from the professional tools until they can start pulling off the things they want to with your average ones.
