They think Classic RE fans are 30-40 years old? I got into the series when it first started, and I'm 21. Yeah, I didn't buy Re6, because the demo showed me that it was total shit. With capcom's logic, if they wanted a younger audience, shouldn't they, like, go back to classic RE? Those are they games that got us into the series when we were young.

Too risky. Survival horror has a niche audience which means that they wouldn't get the kind of sales that a game like COD gets for appealing to a wider audience. Why make a good game and make less money when we can make a shitty game in return for more money? Sounds reasonable to me. It's not our fault that people are sheep. It's just business.

Honestly I think if a game delivers, like it's really good, then it'll get out there. People who aren't survival horror fans will want to play it because all the survivor horror nuts are into it. The game becomes an experience, like dark souls was to me. I wasn't an adventure-rpg guy (fps/rts really), but it delivered and i was enraptured by its humble beauty. Niche markets are only niche until enough people realize that it isn't a cult.

Still too risky from a general business perspective. It's worth mentioning that the suits deciding the target audience know nothing about gaming; they're just in Capcom to do business and make money. They look at popular trends and what GUARENTEES sales and they go with that to make the most buck for their bang. You can wish they'd set out to make the best old school survival horror game of all time but that's just fantasizing. Better yet, if you believe in the success of survival horror so strongly than make your own game and prove these businessmen wrong when it sells like hotcakes.

  • It was a bit ago, but I believe I was just refering to how a good game could make a market for itself. It is a risk, agreed, because if you're already publishing in a mainstream genre you're at least gauranteed a few sales regardless of whether the product is good, but if you aren't then you aren't.

It's hard to say these days what will sell because console games have been around for a while and now we're seeing all sorts of Hollywood special effects and near-photo-realistic graphics and beautiful environments. There's a lot to compete with in mainstream games but I do think that the indie scene has the best chance of growing big. Minecraft, for example. This was no AAA title and there were no investors supplying money in return for more money, there were no advertising campaigns, and there was certainly no big brand name to sell on. Yet... So I get what you're saying with "Just make a good game and it will sell". It's just too bad the suits at Capcom don't think that way. They rely on market trends to tell them what kind of game should be made.
