I always play a team-oriented role in Battlefield, honestly. As a Soldier I play all-out medic, though I keep an M203 to bust enemies bunkered down instead of healing packs, I'm usually running back and forth reviving dudes. Engineer I'm either repairing my team's tanks or armored vehicles while shooting at the supportfags running at them like retards with C4, or firing off Javelins at vehicles the tanks are engaging. Really my two worst classes are Support and Recon, because I can't find a way to fit into my team well and keep scoring points with them.

Support just mandates throwing down ammo, killing enemies with your big guns, and covering. Recon is just covering your team, designating vehicles, and providing a safe spawn point for your squad. They're, like you said, the harder of the four to balance playing successfully and supporting your team.
