Actually, now that I think about it, was it possible that more Flood landed on Earth after John left for the Ark with Thel's forces? In order to get to the Ark, High Charity had to access the portal at earth, and appeared late in the end-game. I doubt even if the gravemind knew the location, that High Charity could make the journey fast enough without using the portal.
And in this regard, since Thel's forces all went to the other side, the last defending UNSC forces on the planet must have had to engage the Flood that no doubt attempted to take Earth. So, we come to the end-game, and all ships pull away from the Ark, enter the portal back home, and once again R'tas has to do more glassing. Makes sense.
And, now that I'm really thinking about it, I want to know just how bad Earth got hit. Just what was the extent of the Brute forces that ravaged the planet after the Schism? I know Africa got hit pretty hard, and Australia got utterly dunked. My question is why exactly? Australia have something of importance there?
And what of the rest of the planet? Population before and after the Covenant Invasions?
Gah, too many stories left to tell that will never be told.

High Charity got to the Ark the same day as In Amber Clad and Rtas's fleet got there, probably within a few hours or less. So unless the Flood did more damage in that very short time between the time In Amber Clad and the sangheili entered the portal and the time High Charity entered the portal, no. And there's no reason any of the UNSC would have had to engage the Flood because Rtas glassed the infestation before entering the portal. As for the brutes, I don't know, but I assume most if not all entered the portal. Probably all. As for whether any escaped back through the portal when John lit the ring, I don't know. The one thing that is confusing is that getting from Earth to the Ark took 24 days (November 17-December 11), yet Thel arrived back on Earth only 12 days after leaving the Ark (December 11-December 23). That and the fact that it seems that Chief and Cortana ended up in regular space outside the portal pretty much right away after entering the portal, yet they clearly ended up a long ways from the Ark since they survived Halo firing.

I think my H3 Limited Edition book says population about 200,000 post-war. That seems a little excessive, but take that as you will. It's either 200,00 or 200,000 million (Which would make more sense), but I don't have it on hand at the mo' so I can't say.
-
I hope you mean 200,000 or 200 million... and I believe it was the latter.
-
It definitely says 200,000. But I think it is 200,000 million.
-
...why would it be 200 billion, and why do you keep writing 200 billion as 200,000 million? l2math

I just checked and according to Halopedia, the Beastarium says 200 million... so no, not 200,000 or '200,000 million'. But even the 200 million number is seemingly contradicted by other sources.
-
Wait. Oh yeah. I've only just noticed that. It's too late for this. 200 million, then.
-
Damn the invasion of Earth was really -blam!-ing underwhelming
-
I've been bitching about this for years and nobody wants to listen to me

Pretty much the entire game was this way

Australia held the HQ for ONI, FLEETCOM, HIGHCO- Scratch that. The UNSC everything's HQ was in Sydney.

It is possible to slip that in. actually..
