On a related note, during the usual "Moments of silence" people hold on Pearl Harbor Day, I instead focus my thoughts on the thousands of Japanese civilians my country vaporized in the name of "peace".

 •
I instead focus my thoughts on the thousands of Japanese civilians my country vaporized in the name of "peace".
I focus my thoughts on the 1million causalities the US estimated and the national suicide that would have happened in Japan because of Operation Downfall. The nukes were the only real answer to ending the war.

 • Didn't national suicides occur anyway? It doesn't matter if the war was won by a full-scale invasion or a nuclear bomb, the Japanese still lost and had they're emperor/demi-god leader abdicated. That certainly would have caused mass suicides if they were already brainwashed that an American victory meant certain death for them.

 • You actually believe the nukes were only for Japan?

 • Them choosing suicide is a better outcome than us "choosing" death for them.

 • Because we all know more people dying is better than less people dying. We and the other allies should have left German alone after they started their finally plane. That way they would have been able to kill more people. It's shame we and they saved those people instead of them dying. After all more death is better than lives being saved.

 • That makes no sense, and isn't what I'm saying. If somebody chooses to end their own life, that's their choice. We don't have a say in it. Not our fault, and not even guaranteed to happen. But blowing up civilians? Yeah, that actually is our fault.

 • You realize that the cities that we blew up were home to Japan's largest military bases, and that all of the civilians there were trained in hand-to-hand combat?

 •
and that all of the civilians there were trained in hand-to-hand combat?
Are there any Asian that don't know martial arts?

 •
That makes no sense, and isn't what I'm saying.
How doesn't it make sense? According to you more people dying is better than saving people. What doesn't make sense is thinking national suicidal is a better outcome.
If somebody chooses to end their own life, that's their choice. We don't have a say in it.
Because it's not like they were brainwashed into thinking the US were these monsters that you were better off killing your self's than surrendering to. Notice that more Germans surrendered to the US than the Japanese troops and the German civilians didn't kill themselves when the US were in there areas? So your right. People being brainwashed into killing themselves is great.
But blowing up civilians? Yeah, that actually is our fault.
Because invading their country which would result in them committing suicide on a national scale wouldn't be our fault? Drooping those nukes is a hell of a lot better than the outcome for Downfall.
