In a way, she has a mental deficiency that materializes as blood lust; normally she sub-consciously represses it but when certain conditions are present (such as extreme regret, hatred, or will to kill) the deficiency enters an extreme state, resulting in her "episodes."

Alright, that would make sense. Is this genetic or something she developed on her own?

At this point I haven't decided, but as I wrote in Scarlett Memory she as had it since she was very young, so genetic is a distinct possibility.
