In the Terminator movies, a military technology company called Cyberdyne Systems creates the world's first AI, called Skynet. That AI then takes over the USA's nuclear launch facilities and wipes out ~90% of the human population (other countries are part of that, launching nukes in retaliation). Skynet then develops advanced technologies in order to hunt down the human resistance, using Terminator robots, etc. The resistance however is led by John Connor, whose tactics, etc give the humans a fighting edge. Skynet decides to send Terminator robots into the past to kill John Connor and his mother, which is what the plot of the first 3 Terminator movies is about.
