Venus has been very bright over the past month, that is probably what you are seeing. Don't trust google sky maps 100%.

  • If its Venus i wouldn't be surprised. But i've been stargazing a long time and this is brighter than i've ever seen. And im pretty sure i saw venus later on, much less bright than my object, in a position that suggested it wasn't the object. As in would have had to move faster in that direction than the moon orbits the earth.

  • You probably saw jupiter later on as it sets after venus currently. Venus is the brightest thing in the sky that I have seen recently, and confirmed by [url=http://www.nightskyinfo.com/?ModPagespeed=noscript]this article[/url].
