You don't need to know a thing about the past story. The game barely even had assassins in it. 90% is just straight-up pirating. The modern-day stuff might throw you off a bit but the extra stuff you can find by hacking is just backstory that might shed some light on it for you.
AC4 is fantastic and a great place to start the series. The protagonist actually shows growth and isn't some disgustingly noble hero like Connor or Ezio.

Edward is an arrogant, greedy, murderous son of a bitch, and it takes him years to finally realize how his selfishness affects others. And I really liked his indifference to the assassins for most of the game. He's not some master assassin from day one, he's a bastard that just wants money and likes his stolen robes.
