I don't ever get rid of books, let alone burn them. As for games, I only ever get rid of them to try to get a newer game. This usually can only happen at a store that buys used games, unless I can find somebody local that is willing to buy the particular games I am trying to sell at that point. I typically can't.
I think they can be compared, to a point. It certainly doesn't matter to games like GTA V that make an immense amount of money, regardless. Also, it probably isn't a good idea to burn games in particular.

Yeah I've never traded in or sold a book either, I just heard about the practice of burning them to save the Authors royalties lately. If you can find someone local to take either though, that's a better route to take. Yeah, for games that make large amounts of cash it doesn't matter as much, but for games that were good and didn't sell well because they're niche, or games that maybe you yourself liked and no one else did, and so on, those are the cases it works better in. Ha what might happen if you burn them? :p

Depending on local laws, you could get in trouble for just the act of burning them (unless it's indoors), as well as the possible environmental consequences. I don't really know what happens when you burn a disk; it just doesn't seem like that great of an idea, considering that it could release "bad things" into the air, as well as all the melted (whatever specific material(s) they are made of) onto the ground (again, if outdoors). I would perhaps just wipe the disk or break it, to be safe. Or maybe research what could happen and whether that's against the law. I'm too lazy to research that, though.

Good points, I should look into all of that later. Cracking them or breaking them in half seems a better option, can't harm much that way, and the software isn't being reproduced through illegal means or traded around again as well.
