sucks the adventure out of the room for hopeful star pilots.
You're not a star pilot though, you're a Guardian.
If they allowed in-atmosphere flight, it would negatively impact exploration in Destiny. Say there is some weapon hidden on the top of some mountain, and you have to trek up some overgrown trail to reach the summit. That could all be skipped if you can just fly up to the top.
So the only place left to allow flight is in orbit around planets or other objects. But think about how sterile an environment that is. Sure the background will change, depending on where you are, but space is otherwise empty.
There are no paths to follow, doors to unlock, treasures to find. The only activity of any real entertainment value would be dog fights.
Now sure, a dog fight would be fun once or twice, but I don't think it's something people would end up going back to much. Not when there's a planet below you with loot to find.

There doesn't need to be a lot of something for it to be negatively impacted.
-
I'm quoting you
-
I know. And I'm pointing out why the quote supports me, not you.
-
No I'm just saying the game wasn't as big as we had previously expected. I don't mean to offend if that's what is happening
-
Right, I know. You also said I should feel dumb because of what I said. My point is that the game being smaller than expected doesn't negate anything I said. Don't worry, you couldn't offend me.
-
How dumb do you now feel?
-
I don't. Why should I?
-
How little exploration there actually is
-
The amount of exploration in the game is irrelevant to my point.
So the only place left to allow flight is in orbit around planets or other objects. But think about how sterile an environment that is. Sure the background will change, depending on where you are, but space is otherwise empty.
Space is only empty if you want it to be, it's perfectly possible to create destinations and locations in space, as some of the Destiny Concept Art has shown. It certainly wouldn't be a huge part of the game, but it is a wealth of design space that's waiting to be tapped in a future Destiny game.

Star citzen will change that. Trading. Taking over systems. Etc also ground combat.

Did you see the footage from the Roghnut? The Galactic Map sequence that highlights the solar system? The map of the solar system would be an excellent location for players to fly around while protecting the adventure aspect of the on foot experience. It doesn't have to be real time between planets but say something the size of Forge World or larger for reference that contains all the Solar Systems planets and moons. Within this players could at least get some flight time in their ships.

as much as im sure I would find that entertaining , it would be a distraction from the actual gameplay , plus there would always be that one idiot who cant drive and would fly around in circles because he doesn't know where he's going . the fact that bungie has not mentioned or teased this once speaks volumes about its likelihood of not being a main feature , and that all they have cared to say is our ships are off world transportation and gear storage , id likely guess they also are where we start in game when we load up the game . all in all my belief most have just misinterpreted the purpose of our ships , and rather than accept that most are just in denial....

Zelda don't you want to fly your ship? What's your inner kid say?
-
I would , however im more of a realist than an optimist ... and im sure he would , however I think its also fair to mention my inner child still hopes to get his letter to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry , I highly doubt he'll get that ether...
-
Good for your kid. As I recall Bungie wanted to wow your inner seven year old or something to that effect. How does a QuickTime BART event beat actual space flight for the inner kid. It doesn't.

my younger self would just be glad to have a space ship at all , seriously when i was 7 my parents got me the toy Tie Fighter for my birthday , gotta say i hated it , no kid likes having the bad guy's ride....
