I'd prefer to have someone who actually knows how to control a gun rather than someone who has absolutely no experience in holding a gun.

Gun training for purchase is not a bad idea, my state requires a course and 40 hours in some places of range time.

I would support a class on gun use and training being implemented in schools. But, it shouldn't be part of mandatory CORE classes, but, rather, as electives. As for me, I need a permit to purchase a small firearm and certification from the NRA or from the gun store that I bought the gun from.

That was actually a standard 40 years ago, my dad was a military marksman by 11th grade.

My dad never held a gun until he joined the Philippine Army in the ROTC for college. It was mandatory back then. 50+ years later and a continent away, my dad tells me that it's better to learn the art of Eskrima than to hold a gun, but I'm guessing that's more of a heritage thing since pretty much all the guys on my dad's side (Myself included) have some knowledge in eskrima or practice it daily.

That too.
