Banksy, artist or vandal?

Banksy is a world renowned graffiti artist from the UK, we don't even know for sure if he is one person, since he seems to be good at everything from molding fiberglass to cement sculpture to good ol' spray can art. If he spray paints your wall and claims responsibility you can sell that piece of your wall for tens of thousands of dollars. So, artist or vandal?

Coming from someone who has been a graff writer and still does draw a good deal of graffiti, street art is and always will be vandalism so long as it hasn't been sanctioned by the owner of the property it was done on. That being said, it's still art, and my favorite form of art at that. Bansky is just one of many incredible artists that produce their work on the streets illegally. I mean it's hard to say that something like this isn't art just because the property owner didn't intend for it to be there.

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of art, (Understatement) I do like some of his work, but it shouldn't be chopped off the wall and sold.

Didn't he get some old guy to sell his work for $60 a pop at an art fair, not telling people that it was his work? If I recall, only six of his paintings were sold the entire time.

      • Both. Some of his art is great, but I'm sure people would appreciate if he didn't do it on their stuff. He's also a bit of a hypocrite if you watch Exit Through The Gift Shop; dude is all into antiart and being anti-mainstream, but he's , and the guy he accidentally mentored and politely distances himself from is pretty much doing the same bullshit he is, but without pretending to be hella deep rebel guy (per se).

      • I doubt most people know who he is...

        • Both, obviously. His art is great, but often defaces public property.
