sqrt(4x-1) - sqrt(x-1) = 3
Square everything.
(4x-1) - (x-1) = 9
4x-1 - x+1 = 9
3x = 9
x = 3

The only way to get there is if you have a variable that is squared so that you have a quadratic equation. Check the book again.
