T-Mo has exploded in the last year or two. They lit up over 100 cities and areas with LTE coverage earlier this year. I do a lot of traveling and I haven't had any problems with service unless I'm in the boonies, where my friends on VZW/ATT/Sprint don't get service either.
Well I'm still on my parents plan so haven't been keeping up with all of that lol. I have great coverage with Verizon so it's all good till I start looking at my own plan.
My parents signed up with Sprint a few years back. After like 2 hours of doing the contracts and getting the phones set up we go home and we had no service. Went over to a family member's house for dinner that evening and have great service but when we got home, it was dead. Turns out our neighborhood was a deadzone and they the sales person didn't even let us know and even had the nerve to try to sell us a hotspot to get coverage at home.
Their coverage isn't that bad. Is it as good as bigger companies like AT&T and Verizon? No, definitely not, but all in all it's not too bad.
Here's their coverage map: http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage.html
