Iv actually done studies on this myself for school. As you said second hand smoke is MUCH worse than actually smoking. And I agree with you on banning it. I hate at college having to walk through a designated smoking area to get where I have to go.

  • Huh? how the hell is second hand smoke WORSE than smoking? That is just insanely counter to reality. - Der

  • Not really. The smoke that smokers breath in goes through the filter of the cigarette. But smoke coming off the end of the cigarette is not going through a filter. So if a non smoker breaths in that smoke, it is worse.

  • So there is some kind of force field that keeps the smoke off the end of the cigarette away from the smoker? Sorry, no way second hand smoke is worse than smoking. - Der

  • Considering that smokers inhale THROUGH the cigarette, and not from around it yes. If I where to inhale just as much smoke as a smoker except I inhaled only from the tip of the cigarette it would be worse.

  • So there is a force field then?? Or does the smoke naturally seek out non-smokers and surround them and stay away from the smoker? I'm trying to think of a situation where the smoker is only getting the filtered smoke and none of the unfiltered... - Der

  • I'm my saying that. Yes they inhale some smoke from the end of the cig, but when you only inhale smoke from the end of the cig, like non smokers generally do, it is worse.

  • So what you're trying to say is that the unfiltered smoke is worse than filtered smoke, not that sitting in a car with a smoker is worse than smoking? - Der

  • No it's unfair to make a non smoker inhale smoke from a. Smoker

    Agreed. However, you wrote:
second hand smoke is MUCH worse than actually smoking.
Which is factually incorrect. - Der

  • No it's not incorrect. Second smoke. The smoke without filtering is much worse.

  • I hope you're just confusing two different things. I'll distill it down for you. Last attempt. Unfiltered smoke from a burning cigarette is worse than smoke drawn through a filter. TRUE The person not smoking has a greater exposure to harmful inhalants than the smoker. FALSE Making your statement that:
second hand smoke is MUCH worse than actually smoking.
----- > Factually incorrect. - Der

  • Unfiltered smoke is worse, that's a fact. If I breath in the same amount of smoke as a smoker except mine is unfiltered and their is majority filtered. I just got more harmed

  • Describe a situation where you are sitting in a car with a smoker (even windows up!) where you, the non-smoking individual, gets more smoke exposure than the smoker. Doesn't happen. - Der

  • Smoker is getting more exposure to smoke from the end of the cig. I don't think I agree with that logic

  • Not necessarily since they breath in through the cig and then exhale. While me as a non smoker breaths in all the smoke from the end of the cig.

  • The smoker is breathing in just as much "second hand smoke" from the end of their cig. Ill elaborate. If a smoker and non smoker are standing in an area with little or no breeze, the smoke from the end of the cigarette will generally travel upwards (science) and pass over the smokers body and face while they are holding it at their side. After this it will dissipate into the air. The wind could change direction or whatever and no smokers get smoked out for a second but I stand by my previous observation that the smoker will breathe in more second hand smoke than anyone else Also, most smokers will stand downwind of non smokers when socializing as a common courtesy.

  • One of the reasons I like the company that I'm working for is that it is 100% smoke free. You can't smoke anywhere on company property, not even in your car in the parking lot.

  • You can't even smoke in your car at my college either. You HAVE to be in a smoking designated area or else you can get a ticket.

  • It's called private property. You should learn about it.

  • Actually, thats not true, the car doesnt become private property. I have applied this to a cop who was trying to tell me having my gun in my car on gov property was illegal. We looked at the statutes, and unless i carried it out of the car, it was still on my property. Personally that simple explanation doesnt work, unless they specifically state not even in a car, which must be the case. Still pretty retarded.
