I saw a dead turtle on the beach yesterday. All I know is it smelt really bad, I can't even think of appropriate words to accurately describe the smell.

Well, nobody ever said that anything in a state of decay was supposed to smell "pleasant."

Yeah but for some reason it smelt worse than any other dead thing I've smelled before.

It might have been in a later stage of decay than anything you've previously been around. Or the odour of decay from a turtle could be naturally worse than that of other creatures. Assuming it had been in the water recently, it would retain more moisture than other strictly land-oriented animals.
