Edited by Dustin: 9/26/2013 3:30:10 AMUnfortunately that's just not how it works. We've raised minimum wage dozens of times throughout our history and none have resorted in an economic disaster you're claiming it to be.

But it doesn't. There's two factors you must look at: money out and money in. While businesses in California will have to spend more on their employees, there is going to be more money going into the market. When you're talking about minimum wage, you're talking about people who spend every dollar they make. It's called living paycheck to paycheck. While it's not ideal, it at least helps the economy.

Then why not $15, or $20? Think about all that economic activity!! - Der

It's not exactly realistic. You have to raise the minimum wage every once in a while, but minimum wage doesn't alleviate poverty, so raising it to help the poor is just a cheap move that'll hardly help them. Manufacturers are only benefited indirectly from public spending, which means they won't see any of the benefit for a while (the benefit being very small, of course, but it is true that people with less money don't hold back much of their money compared to people who don't have minimum wage).
