You're looking at it the wrong way. Don't look at it like Evangelion as some deep, ERMAHRMAHGEHRDSYMBOLISM sort of thing, or a character driven sort of thing. It's akin to Evangelion in that it's a dark satire of it's respective genre. In the case of Madoka, it takes the Magical Girl genre and flips it on it's head, making it darker and grimmer over time than the usual cheerful, bubbly cheesecake that's the norm of the genre.

    Has it? I really wouldn't know, as my extent of knowledge pertaining to Magical Girl anime is limited to knowing of Sailor Moon (who hasn't at least heard of it?), Pretty Sammy, and Madoka.
