Good question. Xbox1 looks like something straight out of a 1984 dystopian novel. The camera is required, they say it'll always be on. And in todays technologically advanced age, someone could easily hack the cam and spy on your whole family. Not to mention the recent revelations by Snowden which proves our 4th amendment is non-existent now, so big brother will be watching you.

This whole post can be answered in one little statement, unplug it.
-
Well I wrote that post prior to my knowledge that the cam is no longer mandatory, and that the always on feature is gone..
-
Even if it was still mandatory no one would be spying on people, the only people who think that are immature little kids and ps4 fanboys
-
No, more like critical thinkers who are aware of our increasingly authoritarian govt and its blatant disregard for our right to privacy. It has nothing to do with the console.
-
Mobile phones. CCTV. Laptop webcams. PC webcams. Microphones. This is a list of items which can be accessed by external sources and used to spy on you. No-one seems to care that their mobile has rear and front facing cameras which can be hacked into while connected to a network. No-one seems to care that their laptop has a webcam staring at them as they play or work. No-one cares that every time you go into a town, village, or anywhere with CCTV, you are being recorded and watched. No-one seems to care that your desktop microphone can be used to record sounds from inside your home if it's plugged in. But as soon as a games console has a camera, people lose their minds. Remember Kinect on the 360? No-one seemed to care about that spying on them either. But all of a sudden, Kinect 2.0 is an NSA spyware product. Shut up.
-
lol. I for one care about all those things. And kinect for the 360 was at least optional... And I don't think iphones and laptops have night vision and capabilities to map the entire room and monitor movements. Basic cameras and mics are a concern, but super high tech mandatory cameras has invasion of privacy written all over it. But you like most people don't care.
-
So I take it you don't own a mobile phone with a camera on it then? As others have stated, Kinect is no longer mandatory - it doesn't ever have to be plugged in if you don't want it to, unless a developer makes a game require Kinect. Which I guarantee some will do to start utilising the power of the device. IR sensors are hardly a worry either. What are you planning on doing playing in the dark which you wouldn't do playing in the light? Whenever I game I have the lights on because staring at a bright screen hurts like hell after a while. Mapping the room is the only valid thing I can really see with Kinect 2.0, because I can understand people not liking the idea of a digital copy of their living room/bedroom being out there (even though in 99.9999999% of instances it'll only be stored locally, where the 0.0000001% of instances are hacks). And that's assuming people get past the Microsoft security wall, which as Xbox LIVE has shown us before, is really, really hard. I understand the concerns, but I for one think they are naive, hypocritical and... well, naive.
-
What are you planning on doing playing in the dark which you wouldn't do playing in the light?
...you didn't really think that one through, did you?
-
How so? If you're playing a game during the day and everything's visible, and you play through until the night but leave the lights off, you're still doing exactly the same thing. Unless you're being suggestive in which case, what the -blam!- are you doing playing the Xbox while you're doing that kind of thing?
-
My phone can take pictures but it does not record. Also hackers aren't what I'm worried about. What I'm worried about is a totalitarian govt legally obtaining access of Microsoft devices to snoop on us. Which is all a possible reality considering the 4th amndmnt is dead. I gurantee microsofts intentions were to sell data to the fed govt which is why at first they said its mandatory to turn on the console and it has a "always on" feature. Thank God the public was outspoken on their discontent.
-
You assume that the government is that competent. That's your mistake right there.
-
Behind the guise of incompetence, there is a small body of elite who IS competent regarding their totalitarian regime.
-
There is your second mistake. Any two people in the government do something, it gets found out. The president cannot get away with something. A mayor can't even take a picture of his wiener without the media catching wind.
-
You're wrong. The govt does tons of shit all the time and gets away w/ it due to their obscurity or bc of the apathy of the public at large or bc the state run media is amazing at pushing false narratives as the truth. I can name a hundred unconstitutional policies Obama has implemented, and has gotten away w/ due to mass ignorance of our society. If you can't see that the Weiner scandal was a mere distraction, all hyped by state run media, to erode all the tension due to our govt's authoritarian unconstitutional policies that was revealed earlier today. Trust me, I eat sleep and breathe politics. I'm paying close attention, and they're -blam!-ing us good. And you're more evidence of the general ignorance of just how intrusive is really becoming and already is.
-
Schizophrenia is the word here. Personally, I'm more worried about children in China hacking into my computer or worse yet, the Stock Exchange. I just see these "obtrusive" actions as the government following the example that private companies have been doing for years.
-
LOL. You need to do some more research buddy.
-
Or I could move to a different country. I got that option.
-
This the kind of tin-foil-hat-wearing naivety I'm talking about. Can you answer me this, please? What does the US government want to do with footage of you sitting down and playing on the Xbox for a few hours, or sitting watching TV? The answer to that is: Nothing. Not only that, but it only seems to be the American population who are up in arms about it (even though it has been debated in the EU, but that's down to laws over concerns). Here in the UK, I couldn't care less. If David Cameron wants to watch me playing on my Xbox for a few hours a day, he can. What's he going to do with it? Know that I play games? Sounds to me that you should be more concerned with your government than a £100 camera watching you game.
-
Sigh* Why is everyone on the Bnet forums so aggressive to opposing opinions. The immaturity makes me want to refrain in defending myself to someone so naive about autgoritarian govt's...
-
I'm only aggressive towards opinions which I find ludicrous. I mean seriously, live in a city and on average you're caught on CCTV as much as 300 times a day, sometimes even more. This should be more worrying to you than a single camera which only sees you when you're playing on the Xbox, because unlike the Kinect 2.0, CCTV cameras will track your daily habits, monitor your location from day to day, and actually allow the government to build a profile on you and your actions. Compare that to your Kinect 2.0, which is only going to see you either: 1. Sat down in front of it playing on the Xbox. 2. Stood up in front of it playing on the Xbox. There's no profile to be made of you in this manner, other than that you play games. Like I said, if you're really worried about it, you need to be focusing on countering the government rather than a gaming camera. Rallying against the Kinect sensor is like busting a small-time drug dealer. Sure you take him off the streets, but the big guys who supply him will just find someone to replace him. So you go after the suppliers themselves, and in doing so, you kill off the dealers.
-
I'm sure you scallywags in the UK love your nanny state where the govt watches you 24/7 inside and outside your home, but here in America liberty and privacy is a priority to some of us still. So what may seem ludicrous to you may not be so ludicrous to people on the other side of the planet. Your strong defense for gaming console is cool and all, but being offensive usually destroys the meaning for discussion.
-
Hardly, no-one likes the idea of being watched all the time, but we're happy enough to accept that it happens for security. I mean, of all the times you're caught on CCTV, unless you're a wanted criminal or the footage is being used for the sake of evidence, sooner or later it gets deleted and that's the end of it. It just boggles my mind that Americans are so scared of their own government. They worry about tyranny all the time, and most pro-gun citizens normally use the argument that they're protecting themselves against violence-lead tyranny. That's not naive at all. You have to understand, I'm anti-government as much as the next edgy teen, but to worry about civil liberties and freedoms because of a few cameras is, quite honestly, almost laughable. If tyranny is something the people were truly worried about, then why hasn't something been done about it? The people control the country, no matter how a government labels it. If you don't vote for them, they can't do anything. Pick a candidate who you can trust, and make them be open about their activities (unless it's something which discloses sensitive information like military ops, undercover work, etc). Without the people, the government is nothing. And without a government? People aren't just going to turn into mass-murderers.
-
Before claiming that our right to bear arms bc of tyrannical govt, look up why our founders created the 2nd amendment in the first place. Not to mention Dictators such as Stalin, Mao, & Hitler made it a primary goal to disarm to populace. Which ultimately led to millions of people being slaughtered by their own govt. I'm sure all the germans thought exactly as you did, "oh its for our safety, it's okay, I trust a few elite to run our lives" Also the very definition of tyranny means you have no real say in political affairs and we can't do shit about it! that's why it's called tyranny lol. Also your apathy towards govt intruding in our lives is exactly what tyranny needs to gain a foot hold. You think they're just going to stop at cameras on every street corner, and in your home? Do you really think a govt capable of mass sweeping and data mining of everyone won't be abused? If knowledge is power, the NSA has absolute power. And if power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. "A people who will give up a little liberty for temporary safety deserve neither, and will lose both." Ben Franklin
The camera is required, they say it'll always be on.
You mean the Kinect; which can be unplugged.
-
Sure, but doesn't it require to be kinected for you to turn it on? Or even access the menu etc etc?
