Should political parties be abolished?

This would force people to vote for a candidate based on their own individual merits rather than just being part of a group. Should the Democrat and Republican parties just shove off?

  • No. A better solution, IMO, is to introduce ranked/preferential voting. It would serve to weaken the power of established parties and open politics to more perspectives, but that's also why the parties would not vote to implement it. There's also no guarantee that people would change their voting habits, but at least the opportunity would be there.

  • They'd just get renamed to "groups" or "factions," maybe "coalitions." Nothing would change. loldeadthread

That would be impossible. People naturally create groups based on their beliefs. I do, however, think they should remove the D and R from ballots. That would stop people from impulsively voting for every candidate in their party. I'm sure it wouldn't change much, but at least people would have to put more effort into knowing the candidates.

    • People who vote for a party solely because of a name and not a person for what they believe shouldn't vote anyway

    • parties as an idea would never disappear, man. even if the actual "party" is gone, the air of the party would still remain as to what the loose group of people represent as far as opinions and political tendencies go.

      • No, most definitely not. Introduce preferential voting and proportional representation, but, no, don't abolish political parties. That's a horrible idea.

      • Wouldn't work if it happened tomorrow; each candidate would have their own followers and people working with/for them so that would turn into a political party given time. I think we just need a lot more political parties to actually represent the multitude of views there are, because contrary to how it seems, you don't have half the country Republican and the other half Democrat; there are other views.

      • That makes no sense OP, parties would still be formed by the majority of people who share the same views on things.
