I really dig stouts and porters. Pic related: a porter/pilsner mix that I really enjoy.

  • Never had a stout or porter. What would you suggest some one to try?

  • They taste similar, and can be a bit rough the first time you have them. Start out with a Guinness Extra Stout, that was my first and I loved the style ever since. If you like the taste of black coffee, you'll love them. Chocolate stouts are good to try too.

  • I've had Guinness a couple of times. It was pretty thick, almost creamy? whenever I've drank it, it has always reminded me of coffee a tad bit.

As are oatmeal stouts, they're a bit "creamier."

  • Start easy with maybe some coffee or oatmeal stouts, then venture into uncharted territory. The Stone W00tstout is a very interesting brew if you can find it, but it isn't for the amateur dark beer drinker. 13% ABV and the consistency of motor oil.

  • Damn. That sounds like It would take some working up to. what's the difference in brewing technique between your "average" beer and a stout/porter?
