Would Community Service be good for High Schoolers?

Do you think Community Service would be a good requirement for High Schoolers to need so they can graduate High School? The benefits of at least 10 hours of service per student in every city in every state could make a dramatic difference in a lot of places. It's already known that some students willingly do Community Service to make their records look better to Colleges, but what if every student that was going to graduate had to do at least 10 hours? Imagine the benefits if it could be raised to 20? Schools could ask nearby businesses and corporations if their students would be allowed to maintain their grounds or clean up nearby areas and get funding for it from them, then still have some left over for maintaining the schools themselves after they have given the students what they need to perform their tasks. Not to mention the responsibility and honest hard labor that would be taught to each for doing the work. Do you think this is a good idea?

  • Community Service should be more of an "extra credit" thing. I know that a lot of schools offer scholarships for spending a certain amount of time in volunteer work. That way, kids want to do it and don't act like assholes to those they serve.

  • Community service hardly ever does any real support. Most people just clean their grandparent's home, or mow someone's lawn. 10 hours out of 4 years wouldn't be much of anything but a hassle, and more would most likely become a nuisance and get in the way of actual jobs.

    • No, it really is a waste of time. I'd much rather have an actual job than do something that I don't care about, and will never do again in my life.

        • I don't think it's a good idea at all. Kids need to go out get their own work done on their own. Forcing them to do community service will only make them feel like their in a prison more so.

Not everyone is the same. Providing a way to get into it and even giving course credit is a good idea, but some people might have some serious trouble in their lives, whether it be mental illness, student or family health or finances that they need to help with. Forced community service is not something I think should be implemented across the entire student body. Not everything is so simple. This might work out for the students doing well, but some of the more struggling individuals may be overwhelmed with it.

If there could be some kind of obligatory class you had to take where they would go do community projects, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I don't think that kids should be forced to do it on their own. This is coming from someone who has done 100+ hours of community service. It does look good on college applications, but forcing kids to do community service doesn't do much good for the application people, because they're trying to find the kids who take the initiative, not do what they're told.

No, they should want to do it, not be forced to.

                          • A change to this. If someone underperforms on a test, but a teacher believes they can get higher, then opt them in for a community service to be able to take that resit of the test. Student benefits and society benefits
