Unfortunately, our world is filled with double standards. Basically anywhere where a group has been wronged, people are afraid to stand up to members of that group for fear of accusations of hate.
Also, both sides of the political media spectrum are biased. The best news sources, which unfortunately don't sell as well as those designed to entertain rather than inform their readers, are the ones that present the news in a light that is unbiased as possible, allowing readers to form their own opinions. I am aware that pure lack of opinion is impossible; however, not enough news sources do their part to at least limit this.

It used to be different. 30 years ago the networks had news divisions that lost money. This was considered acceptable. But over time, the news industry became more and more of a business and they were expected to be profitable alongside their entertainment divisions. So the "news" became less about investigative journalism and more about what's going to happen to Bieber's monkey in Germany.

On the note of the controversy, it is incredibly unfortunate that some African-Americans are enacting the same double standard that they fought so hard to remove, and are not being reported in the media for it. I realize that the perpetrators are only a small portion of the African-American population, but it still shows major problems in Western news media. I would have liked to be alive 30 years ago to see how the media has changed over time so I could offer a more informed opinion on this.

I agree. But it's a doubled edged sword unfortunately.
