What was I supposed to do, just magically remember the password to my account after months of inactivity? Plus, the username to my account was awful. Even if I did remember it, I no longer wanted to post under that name or be affiliated with it.

Yes, I still remember my Runescape login info and I haven't play since 09. You info should be easier to remember but hard to guess.
