Option D was hilarious because I discovered it totally on accident. Games these days have too much hand-holding and restrictions, I was legitimately surprised when there was an actual penalty for shooting at something I shouldn't have.
Option D was part of the extended cut. Before Bioware released that fans had been asking them to create an ending where they were able to reject the starchilds redonkulous claims and assertions and win through conventional means, keeping the original spirit of mass effect intact. You don't have to shoot him to get this ending, you can also try and refute what the starchild is saying.
They responded by killing off the entire universe for questioning their decisions on the original ending. It really was a "fuck you" to the fans.
