It sucks that it happened but look at 4:07 that looks like he does have an RPG. The fact that he keeps peaking around the corner also doesn't help. Insurgents and the Taliban don't wear army uniforms, most of the time they look like civilians. As for the other people, it did look like they were caring weapons.
-
Does that justify them shooting at the people who merely went to go help them?
-
Of course it does, why were those people helping them in the first place? Lets say you're in Iraq fighting insurgents. You wound one of the insurgents, and two random people start pulling that insurgent to safety. Why in the hell would they do that if they weren't insurgents themselves? Why would a civilian risk his life for an insurgent or Taliban? Whoever was in that van was not thinking straight. The helicopters opened fire on the people on that area, helicopters are still in the air circling where they fired. Why would you think it would be a good idea to try and help one of the people that just got shot by those helicopters? Also why in the hell would you take your children to a hot zone like that? The soldiers were probably going to pick up that wounded men but since those two tried to rescue him, his dead and the rescuers are dead.
-
First of all, note that insurgents are generally the family of innocents. Second, those helicopter pilots broke the rules of engagement by firing upon people who were trying to serve the role of medic.
-
Yes, yes it does, Optics for an attack helicopter, are not as sophisticated back then as they are now. The gunner and pilot were not in the wrong believing the people to have AK's and RPG's, at one point the man with the camera, peeks around the corner, making the camera look like a launch tube with an RPG in it. This was pointed at American soldiers. The helicopter crew did the job they were trained to do. It' also a live fire scenario, Imagine you were the Gunner in this position, You just killed people YOU believe are terrorists who were about to shoot at your fellow soldiers. (Hold on forget to add in, these soldiers were also being shot at when this camera crew died, The helicopter crew thought these guys were coming in to help kill the Americans.) A van rolls up, and people get out and start picking up the wounded, who you believe were bad guys, you obviously don't see the almost impossible to make out children (Which look like one giant blob) So you have a choice here, let the wounded go, who you believe would come back and shoot at American soldiers again, or kill them, and save a soldiers life? The people in the van made a horrible choice going into that kill zone, and they paid the price for it, you don't go into a kill zone that was hot 3 minutes ago and try to pick up the wounded, you will be seen as an enemy of the other force, and possibly be killed.

You gotta be kidding me...
-
Nope I'm not kidding you. This is my first time watching this video so I'm judging solely on what I saw on that video. Why are the helicopter there in the first place? My guess would be that they got Intel that insurgents were in that area. From the helicopter view it did look like those people were armed. Those soldiers didn't have the privileged to pause and look at the footage closely. They were judging by what they saw and I'm guessing by what Intel they had.
-
The american soldiers that were on the ground there, got into a large scale firefight, the helicopters were called in to aid the soldiers. It's easy to see here how the helicopter crew is not in the wrong.
-
That makes sense, I figured shit was going down since helicopters were in the air.
-
Not funny.

-
Yea, i hope that's clear.
