Drake's kind of mentally messed up. They touch on that in the third game. It's become a running gag in gaming that Drake is indeed just a psychotic killer.

He is messed up in the 3rd game? Yeah until he realizes it is not worth it. It does not mean he is some psychopathic killer. Do you believe he is a killer? He doesnt really strike me as one. Nobody bats an eyelid at Snake killing so many people.

Snake kills because its his job to kill, and he protects people and stops evil dudes from carrying out their evil plans

That would be a bit equivalent to Drake in terms of stopping bad people.
