Never understood the whole gun culture thing, I don't think I've seen someone carrying a firearm in over three years - including police officers.

Well, simply put. You can't rely on the police to protect you. Lets say a maniac comes smashing into my house right now ( unlikely, but it could happen ) They originally planned to steal stuff to fuel their drug habit. But being on drugs they aren't thinking straight. They get the idea that they need to kill me to "cover their tracks" This person could be far bigger and stronger than me. The police will not arrive in time to prevent my death. If I am even able to call them at all. With my gun, I am able to immediately over power them and take my safety into my own hands. I refuse to be a victim.

Yeah but... you have to take into the probability that something like that actually happens. I'm not sure about the crime statistics in your area but for me I would be willing to bet large amounts of money that I will not experience a violent home invasion in the next 20-30 years of my life, if ever. That type of hypothetical situation simply does not happen in real life around me. Now for you it may be different, but I doubt it'd be a drastic difference unless you happened to live in the seediest of neighbourhoods. The gun culture mindset seems to be seated more in the possession of weapons rather than what your weapon can actually do for you in the course of ordinary daily life (not hypothetical situations). I'm not trying to insult you here, just sharing my viewpoint.

In America the chance of you yourself being involved in a violent situation is actually quite high, and that situation is not necessarily with the other person having a gun, but a knife, or other object that could cause harm. My favorite quote is this. A liberal is simply a conservative who hasn't been mugged yet. You see liberal ideologies breed these types of thugs because Liberals teach no responsibility/accountablility while conservatives live for more responsibility.

I don't wear a seatbelt in my car because I plan on, or want to have a serious accident. I don't have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen because I plan on, or want to have a fire. I don't wear a helmet on my bike because I plan on, or want to fall and hit my head. I don't carry a gun because I plan on, or want to shoot someone. A gun a is a piece of safety equipment just like a seatbelt, helmet and fire extinguisher. And there are other more likely scenarios than a violent home invasion. What if I am attacked by a large dog?

Yeah. You always think it won't happen to you. It happened to This lady
