It would, look at Switzerland. One of the lowest crime rates and everybody is required to own guns.

Crime rate isn't relevant to firearms. Quit assuming there is causality when there isn't.
-
Seriously? They are required?

Edited by Elrond Hubbard: 7/29/2013 9:06:48 PMI'm not much of a gun person, but I find the Switzerland thing interesting. Gun ownership is mandatory, and the crime rate is one of the lowest in the world. I think it's because guns are such a major part of the culture that makes the whole thing work so well. But there seems to be major cultural differences between US ownership and Switzerland ownership. For one thing, in Switzerland, owning guns is to protect the country, because there is no standing military; in the US, it's for self-defense (and if you ask a lot of folks, it's to ward off the big, bad US government). Switzerland also requires a permit; the US mostly does not, because, again, big government is evil for some reason. In Switzerland, training is mandatory; in the US, the NRA would make a shitstorm if that were ever considered by any legislative body, because somehow that's infringing on civil rights. Switzerland just seems so much more... reasonable about guns, if that even makes any sense.

Edited by IchEsseKinder: 7/29/2013 8:49:45 PMIt's optional to have a gun. All men are required though to serve in the military and at the end can keep their rifle. But yes, a place like Switzerland where gun responsibility is taught everyday should be something adopted by more countries. Hell, I wouldn't mind if the U.S required it's male citizens to serve a minimum 2 year service.

Ha that's absolute rubbish. Switzerland isn't the worst place in the world but it still has a lot of problems and a significantly higher death rate due to firearms than other western countries. In fact it's 3rd on the list of western countries.
-
and a significantly higher death rate due to firearms than other western countries.
Oh no! It's .02 higher than Canada! Switzerland is doomed because of their lax Gun laws. Are you -blam!-ing joking?

What? Can you read a graph? Let me hold your hand and walk you through it, see theres a place called Britain and our "Rate of Gun Homicide per 100,000 People" is 0.06, whereas a place like Switzerland has 0.52. 0.52 is a much MUCH bigger number than 0.06. So when someone says that Switzerland has "One of the lowest crime rates" they're simply ill-informed. I have no idea why you are talking about Canada.
-
You said other western countries smart ass. Is Canada not a western country?

This is a conversation?

Furthermore, it's completely inaccurate to compare Switzerland a country that has guns, to Britain, a country that doesn't. Why don't we look at Intentional Homicide Rate by country, not just gun crime. You'll find that the UK is much higher than Switzerland. The UK is also higher in overall crime than Switzerland. Switzerland may have a higher death rate by firearms, but comparing to a country that doesn't have firearms is biased.

Exactly!
