Flood, I need your help!

Just a little bit ago, I was in my backyard playing with my dog. She suddenly jumped up, and then she began investigating something in the yard. I walked over to her, and discovered that she had either caught a bird, or was startled by one on the ground. It was on its back and not moving, but it was breathing, blinking, etc. I didn't want it to be attacked by fire ants. So I picked it up in a towel and set it down in the shade. Its now been about 30 minutes, and its still alive, moving slightly, but hasn't tried to fly. I've left it alone, hoping it would take off, but no such luck. I think it looks like its an adult bird - no down feathers, a nice full tail, etc. I don't see any major damage to the bird, but I can't guarantee that my dog didn't crunch it once or twice. Looking at its wings, my husband thinks that it may be someone's pet. I've never had a pet bird, so I don't know what clipped wings look like. I knocked on my neighbor's door, (they have pet birds) and asked them if they were missing one. They weren't. So, my question is, Flood.... What do I do with it now? Just leave it alone and hope that it flies away? Can anyone help me identify the bird? I'm currently in South East Texas, USA. -I googled yellow birds in my area, and it looks like it may be a pine warbler...?

          • You might have to put it down if it's too injured to fly. If you leave it their and it cant move it a easy meal and that death wont be painless.

I really doubt it is a pet. It looks like any garden variety wild bird. If it's injured, you may as well do it a favor and just finish it off. Birds don't last long injured, because of cats. It was probably already on the ground due to injury or illness, if you did not see your dog catch it. Sorry, but I wouldn't invest in a wild bird, in case you were thinking of a vet or something.

          • It's easy to help it. Observe it carefully and softly check it's wings to see if anything is fractured or broken, find it bird seed and get it water, then give it a specific section in the yard where it can rest but be safe from your dog or other animals. If you find anything wrong with it's wings, get a light amount of gauze and materials to give it a small sort of crutch, then leave it be but check on it every now and then. Had that same situation with a bird myself a few weeks ago, it eventually took off fine as day, was probably just frightened or scared and didn't want to try flying for a bit if nothing seems inherently wrong.
