Close, but not quite, it was never going to be replaced by Microsoft's system simply because the PS4 was never going to do it so you'd only have DRM on half of your console sales, that's just pointless from a business perspective.
No, the idea is now to switch to Microtransactions, recoup their losses there instead, so that's fun, all because some people wanted $5 off at Gamestop...

They've had microtransactions for a while - buying player cards and stuff for sports games. They just always seem to add overpriced gimics and annoying adverts and product placement - it just seems everytime you pop in an EA game these days your going to be overwhelmed with 'buy this add on', 'sign up here', 'check this out' - before you actually get to play. Its like your playing one of those free apps/games except you paid £40 for the privilege.
