• The game isn't scary look at my other post to see why I think so.

  • The popular opinion/majority thinks it's scary. I don't think you played it properly if you think the game is composed of jump scares. That's called Doom 3. 3 types of horror games. Amnesia falls under the second category. Monsters don't just pop out. You hear them and think they are somewhere else when they aren't. And with doors randomly flying open and great sounds where can you go wrong with a scary game like Amnesia?

  • Really I can see your point only with one part of Amnesia. There is an area where you are going through water being chased by that one thing under water while running away. Besides that there are no other scenes that I can recall are like that in the game. If anything there are a lot of scenes that are from 1 and some that are from 3 like when you go near the bridge near the end of the game and get ambushed. As for the whole hearing things that is kind of meh. If you can't see it then it can't do shit to you that is my opinion of games. Similar to how if you can't see the enemy sniper you can't get sniped. The game is hardly scary it tries to be scary, but falls short imo. It takes away the ability to fight which personally I view as a bad thing. It is one thing to be able to stand there and fight an enemy and still not be able to do shit to it. It is an entirely different thing to know you just need to run away from everything. The former is scarier imo than the latter. Amnesia is mainly the latter hence why it isn't scary at all to me.

Well the "water level" was a very unique part of the game. Running from monsters is about as good as that because you have to think and move fast. Sound in a game is equally as important as gameplay and story. If you're playing Amnesia and a glass randomly falls or you hear a slight groan it really does add to the scare effect. You think "What the hell was that? Is it near me? Should I hide?" It's these thoughts that really make you scared. If you hear something but don't see it, then a scare factor is added because you don't know what it can do! You could turn around and it might be there. In a game like Dead Space you see a Necromorph slowly moving down the hall yelling. In Amnesia you just hear a sound and you don't know what to do. That's scary. Adding an ability to fight would make it less scary. The invincible monsters make you feel powerless. And with being powerless, comes fear. If you have to run away, you know that the monster is still lurking about and will hunt you down. I respect your opinion, but I feel if you didn't find Amnesia scary you shouldn't play horror games.

  • Nah I think it is more of an issue of I have played too many horror games or know what to expect from them. Being able to categorize them into 3 different categories is proof of that. If Amnesia really was scary it should have broken that mold, but it didn't. That is why I don't think you can call it scary it followed the expectations set by it not giving you something groundbreaking. Don't get me wrong if you are into games that fall under those categories I can see why it would be scary and I respect that. As for myself if it isn't original then it is kind of boring. If anything I kind of think Amnesia is a longer version of Slender with better graphics and plot.

  • Just because you have played too many horror games and know what to expect doesn't mean Amnesia isn't scary. That's like if I said I've played so many RTS games that all of the newer ones suck. Amnesia is categorized under the best category. The one that even if you know what to expect you will still get scared. See previous post of why it's scary. You can't add much else to make a new/better category. The same applies with an RTS. It will always follow unto categories. Amnesia definitely adds some original concepts along with combining them with concepts from other great horror games like Slient Hill 2. Slender is jump scare game. Amnesia is a real horror game. To compare them would be like saying Starcraft is Halo.

  • Not really Slender you get chased while trying to get notes. Personally I really don't see why Amnesia adds that makes it original. You basically just solve puzzles to move on for most of the game. There aren't really too many enemies until near the end of the game and even then I wouldn't say there are enough to be concerned.

  • Slender: Gather notes, turn around OH NOES SLENDY Amnesia: Alright I need to figure out how to break this lock. *Door closes by itself* Da fuq? That's weird. *Groan sound* What was that? *Searching* Oh well. *Breaks lock* Finally. *Monster sound plays* OH GOD RUN *Hides* Does he see me? *Monster breaks closet and kills player* Totally different. Amnesia adds environment to the game. Adding interesting gameplay of blocking doors with chairs etc. The game doesn't need an army of enemies to make you scared. It only needs to put one in a room with you for you to freak out.

  • That only happens at the beginning of the game. After that it tones it down a lot.

  • I haven't beat the game so I can't argue with that. In closing, I think Amnesia is scary to horror veterans and newcomers. You say it's only scary to a newcomer.

  • If some horror veterans want to say otherwise that is fine by me, but that is just how I feel. I have seen some people play it on youtube after my playthrough and it seemed to be the same result.

  • Well I respect your opinion. From playthroughs I've watched and my personal playthrough, I feel the game is scary and I wish more horror games were like. Even if you don't find it scary, you have to admit it's one of the best horror games out right now compared to Dead Space and Resident Evil.

  • Oh I agree completely. If anything I feel Dead Space and Resident Evil have become like action games than horror games.

I'm just stating popular opinion. I actually haven't played the first game, but considering it's renown I figured I might as well try the sequel for myself once it's released.

  • It mainly just has a few jump scares and if anything the only "scary" part about it is you pretty much can't kill anything. It is very easy to "beat" the enemies by reloading areas. The only annoyance in the entire game is you pretty much have to stay in the light, but that isn't an issue since by the end of the game you have so many tinderboxes and oil that it is irrelevant. Really it is only scary if you don't know what to expect, but the game is very linear in that manner. If anything it is more of a puzzle based game with some scary elements in it.

  • Beating enemies by reloading areas isn't playing the game properly and honestly I would have gotten bored of the game if it was all jump scares, yet it is one of my favorites. Of course it is only scary if you dont know what to expect, thats the point of playing through it, the second time wont be nearly as scary.

  • I only did the reload thing near the end of the game when I said "ok this is kind of getting boring just avoiding the enemies and this is getting to be too time consuming." I only played the game once and I never watched a lets play of it. I even played at around 1AM or so in a dark room by myself. I didn't know what to do at the start besides don't go into the damn darkness for too long. There was never any thread other than the occasional enemies you find, but even then you can stand literally a foot or so in front of them and they won't know you are there. Hence why I say the AI is dumb. It was like I was playing Splinter Cell, but I wasn't allowed to hurt the enemy. Hell I have more fun playing Splinter Cell than I do Amnesia. Don't get me wrong it isn't a bad game, but it isn't an all that interesting/scary game from my perspective.

  • Now worries man, everyone has different preferences, AI never had trouble finding me though, unless I had my lantern off and was behind a barrel or in a closet.
